About 1Password
1Password is a password manager and credential management application for keeping sign-in details and other secrets in organized, encrypted vaults. Individuals can save passwords and passkeys, generate strong passwords, and autofill saved credentials when signing in. The same system can hold developer credentials such as SSH keys, API tokens, and other secrets. For organizations, the enterprise password manager adds shared administration: teams can place credentials under policies, set who may access them and when, and manage access across employees, machines, and automated agents. The vault combines everyday access with controls for reviewing and protecting credentials. A built-in risk monitor can flag weak or reused passwords, passwords reported in breaches, and missing two-factor authentication. Administrators can review sign-in activity and item access, stream audit events to security monitoring systems, and suspend accounts when they are compromised. Developer workflows can retrieve secrets at run time through command-line or software development interfaces, keeping them out of source code and version control. For automated and AI-assisted workflows, an administrator can approve a limited set of credentials for an agent to use without exposing the secret itself to the AI model. The service also describes support for single sign-on and automated user provisioning through identity providers, which can help organizations align vault access with their existing account management. The security design described in the product documentation encrypts credentials on the user’s device before they are sent to the service. Unlocking a vault requires the account password and a Secret Key stored on the user’s devices; the service says it does not receive the decryption keys. This allows the same product to serve as a personal password manager and as a centrally managed system for workforce and developer secrets, while keeping credentials available for approved sign-ins and workflows. Administrators can use its access rules and audit records to understand how credentials are used and to apply organization-wide controls.
