About AWS Vault

AWS Vault stores and provides cloud-service credentials for development environments. It keeps identity and access credentials in the operating system’s secure keystore, then generates temporary credentials for use by shells and applications. This helps developers avoid repeatedly handling long-lived credentials directly in command lines or environment files. The tool is designed to work alongside the cloud provider’s command-line tools and understands the user’s configured profiles. It reads configuration from the standard credentials and profile file, allowing existing development setups to be used. Temporary credentials are exposed to a shell or application for a task, while the underlying identity credentials remain in the secure keystore. AWS Vault is intended for developers who need to authenticate command-line tools and applications. The evidence does not specify supported keystores or credential policies on every operating system. Its central workflow is secure local credential storage and temporary credential generation for development use.
