About ComPortInfo
ComPortInfo is a Windows utility for inspecting and managing serial communications ports and their connected devices. It presents COM ports in two views, including their connection types, and can also be used on its own. The interface is useful when a user needs to identify the hardware behind a port, understand its current configuration, or investigate why an application cannot use it. For each port, the utility can display the parameters left by the most recent application that used it. If those parameters cannot be read because the port is in use, that condition is indicated. It also shows the default parameters recorded by Windows and the hardware properties of the port, including supported signals and data rates. These views distinguish the port’s current or last-used settings from its defaults and physical capabilities. The application also provides device actions. Users can safely remove hardware, restart a device after removal, reset a USB port, and change or swap COM port numbers. Restarting devices and changing port numbers require administrator privileges. These controls make ComPortInfo useful both for examining serial-port details and for basic recovery or reassignment tasks when connected hardware is not behaving as expected.
