About GeoServer
GeoServer is an open-source server for sharing and editing geospatial data. It is written in Java and provides a service that can make geographic information available to other users or applications. Editing and sharing are central to its role, allowing spatial datasets to be maintained and accessed through a server environment rather than existing only as local files. GeoServer is intended for publishing and working with geospatial data, not for desktop map drawing alone. Its Java implementation provides a server-side component for systems that use geographic information. Other software can use the geographic data made available by the server. The server provides a shared access point for spatial information.
