About GNOME Dictionary

GNOME Dictionary looks up word definitions through online dictionaries. English is the default lookup language, and users can switch to Spanish or add other dictionaries that use the DICT protocol. This provides a straightforward way to check a word’s meaning while allowing the available reference sources to be adjusted to suit the user. Because definitions are retrieved online, a network connection is needed for dictionary lookups. The application brings word lookup and dictionary selection together in a simple interface, supporting quick checks of spelling and meaning across the configured online sources. This lets users choose reference sources beyond the default English dictionary.
