About Kodu Game Lab
Kodu Game Lab is a 3D game-building environment designed to introduce children to basic programming. A creator can shape the game world’s terrain, place characters and objects, then program how those characters behave and how game rules work. This connects visual world-building with programming: the objects and terrain form a playable setting, while the rules give the characters actions and responses. The programming language uses tiles rather than conventional typed code. Its rules are evaluated continuously, so changes in the world can affect what a character does. For example, a character can be instructed to move toward an apple it sees and eat it when it reaches it; if several apples are present, the nearest can be chosen, and the character can continue after one is gone. This lets learners express behavior as combinations of conditions and actions while seeing the results in the game world. Kodu is designed to be approachable for new users, with a high-level visual language that can express behavior in relatively few lines. On PC, the environment supports keyboard, mouse, and touch input.
