About SnippingTool

SnippingTool is an open-source Windows application for screen capture, annotation, OCR, and recording. Users press Print Screen, select an area, and mark it with arrows, shapes, text, blur, or numbered steps. Captures can be copied to the clipboard or pinned in a floating always-on-top window, keeping a reference visible while using another program. The app can record the screen to MP4 using H.264 or to AVI, and its built-in OCR extracts text from screenshots. These functions make it useful for creating instructions, documenting a problem, or capturing a visual explanation. The product is described as lightweight and says it does not require a subscription or collect telemetry. SnippingTool brings capture, markup, recording, and text extraction into a single workflow.
