About tailcat
tailcat is a netcat-like networking tool that uses Tailscale's data plane to connect two machines without relying on its control plane. The data plane provides point-to-point WireGuard-encrypted tunnels, with a relay available when direct network traversal cannot succeed. Instead of using the network's control service to exchange connection metadata, tailcat leaves that exchange out of band. Users can arrange that exchange through a method of their choice, then use tailcat for the connection over the data plane. This separates peer discovery and connection setup information from the encrypted traffic path. The tool is intended for command-line networking between machines already able to use the relevant data plane. It resembles netcat in purpose, while the underlying tunnel and relay behavior provide a way to communicate across network boundaries. A control-plane service is not part of tailcat's connection-metadata flow.
