About USB Drive Letter Manager
USB Drive Letter Manager is a Windows service for controlling how drive letters are assigned to USB drives. Instead of relying only on the default assignment behavior, administrators can define preferred default letters and manage the way removable drives are named. Because it runs as a service, its work does not depend on the currently logged-in user having permission to change drive letters. The service can address conflicts that occur when a USB drive’s assigned letter overlaps with a network drive or a substituted drive belonging to the logged-in user. It can automatically resolve these conflicts, helping keep removable storage accessible under a consistent letter. Rules for preferred assignments provide additional control over how new USB drives are handled. It supports Windows desktop versions from XP through Windows 11, as well as Windows Server versions from 2003 through 2025. Its service-based operation is intended for situations where drive-letter policy should be applied in the background and should not require each user to have elevated rights. This makes it relevant to systems where removable drives need predictable assignments across logins or where letter collisions would disrupt existing workflows.
