About x264
x264 is a software library and application for encoding video into H.264/MPEG-4 AVC. Video encoding compresses a stream so it can be stored or transmitted more efficiently, and H.264 is a widely used format for distributing video. x264 provides an implementation of that encoding process for applications and workflows that need to produce H.264 video. As a library, x264 can be incorporated into software that encodes video. As an application, it can also be used directly as part of an encoding workflow. These two forms support both integration into other media tools and standalone use where a user or pipeline needs to convert video streams into the H.264 format. The software is free and open source. Its focus is encoding streams into H.264/MPEG-4 AVC rather than serving as a general media player or editor. It is relevant to developers building video workflows as well as users who need an encoder for compatible media production tasks.
