CharacterArc is a desktop writing workspace for planning and drafting novels with the assistance of AI. It organizes work around individual novel projects, bringing together project settings, outlines, characters, relationships, world information, reference material, and chapter writing. The aim is to keep planning and generated assistance connected to the manuscript rather than treating each interaction as an isolated chat. Projects are stored in a local SQLite database, and each project keeps its own settings, chapters, knowledge base, and AI execution logs. This separation helps writers maintain distinct collections of story information and working history for different novels. A project can begin with basic details such as genre, intended length, and synopsis; the application can use those inputs to help prepare initial settings and outlines. Workflow documents can be maintained by volume, and reference works can be examined as part of the planning process. The workspace includes tools for maintaining worldbuilding material, including characters, organizations, relationships, and other foundational facts. A knowledge area can collect project information, reference materials, workflow documents, and style analysis. Outlines, notes, and accumulated knowledge are intended to support the writing of chapters, linking structural planning to the actual drafting process. AI assistance can be configured through compatible service interfaces and the Anthropic protocol. The application can match tasks with built-in or project-level skill packages, and it supports an agent loop for scheduling multi-step work. Writers can therefore use the AI functions within the context of their project’s stored material and selected workflow. Project data is stored locally without relying on online services for that storage; AI provider connections are configured separately by the user.
