About envseal
envseal is a secrets-management tool designed to replace plaintext .env files with encrypted vaults. It stores API keys and other sensitive values in an AES-256-encrypted vault, then provides limited tokens for use in automated CI/CD workflows. The goal is to let build and deployment jobs access only the secrets they need without putting a master password on the runner. The tool supports least-privilege tokens, which restrict access to a defined subset of secrets or actions. It also supports immediate rotation of data-encryption keys (DEKs), the keys used to encrypt stored values. These controls are intended to make secrets easier to manage across development and automated pipelines while limiting the impact of any single credential exposure. envseal is aimed at teams that need to supply secrets to development or deployment processes without leaving them in ordinary text files. Its encrypted vault, scoped tokens, and key rotation provide separate layers of control for storing and using secrets. The workflow is designed so CI/CD runners receive a restricted token rather than the vault’s master password.
