About Étagère
Étagère lets users browse a Calibre book library stored on their own Nextcloud server and download books to an Android device. It displays catalogue details such as covers, authors, series, ratings, publishers, languages, tags, identifiers, and descriptions. Users can search, sort, and filter by author, series, or tag. The library catalogue is cached locally for offline browsing. The app fetches covers and book files when requested rather than downloading the entire collection. It can download EPUBs and other formats held in the Calibre library in the background. Étagère does not include an e-book reader; downloaded books are intended to be opened in a separate reading app. The library is read-only, and the app does not write changes back to the server. For e-readers that can download files from a web page but cannot use OPDS catalogues, Étagère can serve the library over the phone’s local Wi-Fi network. The pages are designed for e-ink screens, with large touch targets and a high-contrast layout. A single book can also be made available through a short address. The local web server is unencrypted, so the supplied description recommends using it only on a trusted network. Étagère requires a Nextcloud account and a Calibre library stored there. It is open-source under GPL v3 and is useful for people who want to browse and transfer books from their own library without using a hosted reading service.
