About Fabularium
Fabularium is an Android app for playing and creating interactive fiction, also known as text adventures or playable novels. It reads a wide range of established story formats, including Adrift, AdvSys, AGT, Alan, Glulx, Hugo, Level 9, Magnetic Scrolls, Scott Adams Adventures, TADS, and Z-code. The app includes interpreters for these formats, so users can keep multiple text-based games in one library and play them on a phone or tablet. The built-in development environment lets users create games in Glulx, TADS 3, and Z-code. Fabularium supports Unicode text and allows custom keyboard layouts to be defined. A keyboard can send a single character, a complete command, or a sequence of commands to the interpreter; different layouts can be configured for particular game and interpreter combinations. Users can also disable the built-in keyboard and use the device’s system keyboard. Reading presentation is highly adjustable. Users can change margins, fonts, colors, and line spacing to suit a game and screen, and a hardware keyboard can provide additional screen space. The app includes accessibility support for TalkBack, including touch exploration and lift-to-type input. Fabularium does not include story games; users add game files separately from device storage, and the app can extract games from ZIP archives. It is free, open source, and ad-free according to its description. The broad format support makes it suitable both for exploring existing interactive fiction and for developing new works in several supported authoring formats.
