About Foggy Maps

Foggy Maps is an exploration map that reveals areas as the user physically travels. The world begins covered by a translucent fog, which clears along the recorded path. The app presents progress on a pixel-art map with a reveal radius influenced by the accuracy reported for each GPS fix. Raw track points and a tile-based heatmap are stored locally, and the heatmap can be rebuilt from the points. The app can record visits to cities, regions, and countries in a dated passport-style scrapbook, alongside landmarks and badges. Cleared areas contribute experience toward real-world landmarks, while the product says rewards are based on new ground rather than streaks. Photos can be pinned to locations and clear nearby fog. Users can import GPX tracks or location history and export GPX or a full JSON backup. Optional WebDAV backup to a user-managed server can run on startup, daily, or on demand. Map data includes a street basemap, terrain, and place names. Online map requests are enabled by default and reveal the approximate visited area to map-data servers. They can be disabled, after which the app makes no network requests; map endpoints can also be configured to point to a user’s own server. Foggy Maps is intended to turn personal travel into a local exploration record. Location access is central to its live map feature, and users can choose between online maps and a fully offline setup.
