About Glyfen

Glyfen is an Android app that makes printed words inside photos searchable. It runs optical character recognition (OCR), which detects text in an image, on the device and stores the recognized text in a local database. A user chooses photo folders and starts a scan; afterward, searching for a word returns images whose recognized text contains that word, along with a preview of the text. This can help locate receipts, documents, screenshots, business cards, labels, and similar images by their contents rather than by remembering where they were saved. Scanning is manual rather than automatic or scheduled. A scan can continue while other apps are in use and resumes after interruption. New images are included by starting another scan. Processing time depends on the number of images and the phone’s hardware, so large collections can take time. Results can be searched across the indexed library using full-text search. Recognition and dictionary correction are tuned primarily for Latin-script text such as English; the underlying recognition model also supports a wider range of scripts, including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic, and Arabic. Glyfen handles JPEG, PNG, WebP, and HEIF/HEIC images, with HEIF/HEIC support on Android 9 and later. It accounts for rotated camera photos using image metadata. The user selects folders through the system folder picker, and the app’s description says it does not access images outside those granted folders. OCR results remain in a private on-device database and are not uploaded. Optional diagnostics are off by default and leave the device only if the user chooses to share a bug report. Because all recognition happens locally, Glyfen needs no network connection for OCR or search, while the work is performed by the phone. It is suited to people with image collections containing useful printed information who want to retrieve those images by a phrase or keyword.
