About gperf
gperf is a GNU tool that generates perfect hash tables. A perfect hash function maps a known set of keys to table positions without collisions, which can make lookup efficient when the set of keys is fixed. gperf takes a collection of keys and produces a hash function and table suitable for use in software. This makes it useful to developers implementing fast lookup for reserved words, identifiers, or other known strings. Its role is code generation for hash-based lookup, rather than general data storage or a runtime database. Generated tables can be embedded in software for quick lookup of known values.
