About HoldToSpeak
HoldToSpeak is a Windows voice-dictation utility built around push-to-talk: hold a keyboard shortcut, speak, then release it to insert the recognized words at the current cursor. Because it types into the application already in use, dictation can fit into writing, messaging, coding and command-line work without switching to a separate editor. The software selects a text-insertion method for the target application, which is intended to support terminals, Windows Subsystem for Linux, development environments, browsers and chat tools. It switches to verbatim transcription in terminals and code editors so spoken commands and code are not rewritten. Password fields are detected and excluded from dictation. A plain-text personal dictionary lets users add preferred spellings for specialized terms. Speech recognition runs on the computer after a one-time download of its recognition model, so ongoing dictation does not require a network connection. Users can build a reusable vocabulary and invoke transcription only while holding the shortcut, keeping the interaction under direct keyboard control. The tool is designed for use across existing applications rather than requiring documents to be prepared inside a dedicated dictation workspace.
