About Insular

Insular uses Android’s work-profile feature to isolate selected apps and their data from the personal profile. Users can clone apps into the profile, run multiple accounts at once, freeze or archive apps to prevent background activity, and hide apps. Shortcuts can unfreeze selected apps on demand, and marked apps can be frozen again with one tap. The app can selectively enable or disable VPN access for groups of apps and can prohibit USB access to help mitigate physical-access attacks. Creating the work profile requires device-administrator access, and recognizing app state requires usage access. Some devices may be incompatible or not encrypted; the setup flow provides an option to bypass that limitation manually. Insular has no internet permission and is designed for local app isolation and management. Removing it completely requires destroying its work profile first; if the app has already been uninstalled, the profile must be removed from Android settings. These steps matter because apps cloned into the profile are managed separately from their personal-profile copies.
