About Marmalade TTS
Marmalade TTS is an Android text-to-speech engine that can read text across apps using the system’s standard TTS interface. After it is selected in Android settings, apps that request spoken output can use Marmalade. An English voice is included so speech works offline from the first launch; larger or additional engines can be downloaded when chosen. The multilingual engine supports English, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Hindi, Japanese, and Mandarin Chinese, with automatic language detection. Users can create voice aliases by adjusting speed and effects, then assign different aliases to different apps. Unrouted apps use the primary alias. The app includes 22 voice-effect presets and an editor for creating custom effect chains. It supports TalkBack and is designed around accessibility requirements, with labeled controls and spoken announcements for progress and errors. A foreground playback service can read long text with the screen off and provides lock-screen and Bluetooth controls. Users can share text from other apps or invoke Android’s read-selection action. Marmalade also offers a reader view: sharing a link opens the article in a simplified view and reads it aloud, highlighting the current paragraph. The app says it loads only the shared page, not its images or trackers, and does not store the page. On-device voices keep text on the phone; optional cloud voices require the user’s own API key, and providers may have their own logging policies. Marmalade has no accounts, analytics, telemetry, or its own backend. It is open source and has no ads.
