About Mastodon

Mastodon is a social networking app for reading and publishing posts across a decentralized network of servers. Users follow people and hashtags, read a chronological feed, and take part in conversations. Posts can include polls, images, video, or audio, and content warnings can hide posts until a reader chooses to reveal them. Lists help organize accounts, while filters can hide words or phrases. The app supports multiple accounts, profile sharing through QR codes, and notifications when selected people post. Users can publish to followers or more broadly, and public posts can be read on the open web. Mastodon servers are interconnected, so an account on one server can communicate with people on others and across the wider federated network. Users choose a server, and the same protocol lets them connect across independently operated communities.
