About Nonius
Nonius turns the sensors and audio capabilities of an Android phone into a set of measuring instruments. It includes a level, compass, ruler, sound-level meter, musical tuner, counter, altimeter, light meter, metronome, and G-force meter. Each instrument has controls suited to its measurement, and sensor-dependent tools are shown as unavailable when the device lacks the required hardware. Measurements can be calibrated to account for differences between devices. The level can store a zero point and report angles or slope in several units. The compass displays heading and magnetic field strength; true-north readings use a declination value entered by the user because the app does not request location. It can also use the magnetic sensor to detect nearby metal. The ruler can be calibrated against a bank card rather than relying only on the phone’s stated pixel density. Other tools include sound measurement in dB(A) or dB(Z), with peak and minimum hold; a tuner that displays note and pitch deviation, with adjustable concert pitch; a persistent tap counter; and an altimeter that measures height relative to a user-set reference. The light meter spans low to high illumination levels. The metronome supports adjustable tempo and beats per bar, while the G-force display reads the magnitude of the three accelerometer axes. The microphone is requested only when using sound measurement or the tuner. The description says audio is processed into a reading and discarded rather than recorded, and that calibration settings are the only stored data. Nonius has no internet permission and is open-source software under GPL-3.0-or-later. It is useful for quick measurements where a phone has the relevant sensor, with results dependent on device hardware and calibration.
