About OSSEC HIDS
OSSEC HIDS is a host-based intrusion detection system. A host-based detector focuses on activity on an individual computer or server, helping administrators monitor systems for signs that may require investigation. OSSEC is intended for security monitoring at the host level rather than as a network firewall or general-purpose antivirus description. Its open-source project status makes it a software system that organizations can deploy as part of a security-monitoring setup. The product’s role is to detect and report potentially suspicious activity associated with monitored hosts, providing a basis for further review by administrators. It is intended to identify activity on individual monitored systems for administrator review.
