About Smoke
Smoke is a decentralized communication app for exchanging encrypted messages without requiring an internet connection, account registration, or a phone number. Instead of relying on one central service, it can communicate over TCP and UDP connections, including direct or multicast network traffic. This makes it suitable for exchanging messages between devices on a local or otherwise reachable network. The app supports contact aliases, so users can identify people without relying on phone-number-based accounts. It includes an application lock and uses authenticated encryption to protect message contents. Its design also uses key-derivation and key-exchange mechanisms to establish communication keys. These are technical processes that help protect messages and prepare a secure connection between participants. Smoke is intended for users who want a network-based communication tool with minimal dependence on online services. Its decentralized approach means communication depends on devices being able to reach one another through the available network paths. It supports TCP and UDP unicast and multicast, and does not require internet connectivity.
