About Square Chess
Square Chess is an Android chess app designed for square or near-square screens, e-ink devices, compact displays, and devices with physical keyboards. The chessboard takes priority in the layout and can be controlled by touch or by typing moves such as standard algebraic notation or coordinate moves. A dedicated e-ink mode uses a clear black-and-white board, shape-based highlights, and no animations. Players can face the computer at ten difficulty levels and enable hints when they want help. The app includes 10,000 offline tactics puzzles; players can select a theme or complete a quick set of five, and missed puzzles return for review. Two people can play on one device with an optional chess clock. Games played on a physical board can be recorded and reviewed afterward, and completed games can be exported as PGN for use in other chess software. A standalone chess clock is also included. Square Chess runs locally on the device, with no account, advertisements, or internet permission. Games and settings stay on the device. Although it works on conventional Android phones and tablets, its layout and input options are especially intended for less common screen shapes, e-ink displays, and physical-keyboard devices.
