About Subster

Subster is a pass-and-play music party game that uses songs from a user’s own compatible music server. A mystery song plays without revealing its title, artist, or year. Players guess where it belongs in a shared timeline relative to songs already collected. A correct guess keeps the card, and the first player to reach ten cards wins. The game is designed for people to take turns on one device. The app connects directly to a Subsonic-compatible server and does not require an account or a separate game backend. Users can save multiple servers and switch between them; each server remembers its own library and playlist. Deck building ranks songs using popularity information and a bundled selection of well-known chart tracks, while original release years are drawn from public music metadata sources so that a later remaster can still use the original year. Players can skip a song, wager against another player’s placement to steal a card, or earn a bonus by naming both title and artist. Difficulty presets, year ranges, genre filters, and clip-length options let groups adapt a game. Playback can continue with the screen off using lock-screen controls. The interface is available in English and German. The product sends artist and title information to external metadata services when online metadata is enabled; settings include a mode that excludes a commercial popularity source and an offline mode that contacts only the user’s own server. Server credentials remain on the device and are stored as a salted token, except for servers requiring legacy authentication, where the app says the password must be retained. Subster is intended for groups who want a music trivia game based on their own library. The timeline mechanic turns music recognition into a relative-date guessing game rather than a quiz that asks for a precise year on every turn. The deck can be filtered by release-year range and genre, and the clip length can be adjusted. Separate server profiles make it possible to change collections without re-entering each connection, and each profile retains its own playlist. Metadata lookup is configurable: a full online mode ranks tracks and retrieves original release years, a reduced mode omits one popularity source, and offline mode limits communication to the user’s music server.
