About SyncRecord

SyncRecord turns multiple Android phones into a synchronized, ad hoc microphone array. A session begins with one device acting as the master and other devices joining with a unique session identifier. The app can capture raw audio from all participating phones at the same time, then use audible pseudo-random calibration signals and cross-correlation to estimate timing offsets and relative device positions. Under the product’s stated test conditions, temporal misalignment was reduced to within 52 samples at 48 kHz, and distances between devices were estimated within 14 millimeters. The app offers three modes: synchronized recording with localization, device localization without continuous audio capture, and unsynchronized multi-channel recording. In synchronized mode, aligned recordings are assembled into multi-channel archives for later analysis. Automatic calibration and signal processing require a backend server for session management. Users can connect to a demonstration server or deploy a local server; the product says local deployment can reduce latency and gives the user control over data handling. In the cloud mode, audio is deleted after a session ends, according to the description. No user login is required. SyncRecord is intended for acoustic research, sound-source localization, and multi-device audio acquisition. Phones must support unprocessed audio capture, and their built-in microphones are directional, so placement and orientation affect the setup. The description recommends positioning devices within audible range and facing them toward the center of the array. The app is open source. Its accuracy figures are reported under test conditions and should not be read as a guarantee for every room, phone, or recording arrangement. The calibration signal is audible and is used to estimate propagation delays between devices; cross-correlation of captured audio provides the timing information for synchronization and localization. The app can also run without synchronized calibration, preserving a standard multi-channel recording workflow. In the localization-only mode, it estimates the geometric arrangement of devices without retaining continuous audio streams. A synchronized session combines the position estimate with corrected time offsets so the resulting channels can be compared during later analysis. Users can choose the cloud demonstration service or a local backend, but the app requires some backend for session coordination and signal processing.
