About TABI
TABI is a Japanese-learning app designed around short daily lessons and a staged route from the writing systems toward practical reading. It organizes learning into eleven stations that unlock in order. Each station has two practice trials and a test; passing adds a stamp to an in-app collection. A daily session introduces up to eight new items and then asks about twenty questions drawn from material already covered. Completing a session marks the day regardless of score, and the app has no streaks or decay mechanic, so missed days do not erase progress. The curriculum starts with hiragana and katakana, including memory aids and practice distinguishing similar-looking characters. It then covers numbers, prices, time, counters, common phrases, food ordering and menus, and practical sign kanji. Later topics include train information, platform boards, transport cards, spoken directions, particles, sentence building, and the first 104 kanji. The range is intended to connect basic language study with everyday situations such as reading signs or choosing a train. Exercises vary: multiple choice, typed answers in romaji or kana, listening, matching, tile-based sentence building, and interactive-looking examples of menus and platform boards. Incorrect answers explain the rule that was missed. Every reading is printed, so audio is not required. When a Japanese text-to-speech voice is installed on the phone, some listening questions play the sound first and reveal text after the response; a control can replay a line more slowly. TABI requests no internet permission, and progress stays on the device. It can be backed up as a file or text. The app is open-source under GPL-3.0-or-later. Its short, structured sessions suit independent beginners who want practical vocabulary and reading practice without a streak-based schedule.
