About Tane
Tane is an offline-first app for keeping an inventory of traditional seeds and choosing which ones to offer for sharing. A seed entry can begin with a photo and a name; users can add details such as the year, quantity, source, and germination test results. Search and filters help organize a collection, and a photo can be captured first and labeled later. The app is intended for individual seed keepers as well as collectives maintaining a shared inventory. The seed book works without an internet connection and is stored on the device. The app can create an encrypted backup and a printed recovery sheet for restoring the collection on another device. Users can mark seeds as available to give away, exchange, or sell, and print a catalog of those offers for use at a seed fair. Sharing offers and messages with other people requires a network connection and uses community-run relay servers. Users can choose which servers to use, disable them, or configure another server. The app also describes an optional encrypted copy for keeping a person’s own devices in sync. This gives Tane two connected roles: a local catalog for recording and searching seed varieties, and an optional sharing tool for coordinating offers and messages. The local collection can remain offline, while communication and sharing rely on the selected relay services.
