About vfox
vfox is a cross-platform command-line version manager for installing and switching between software development tool versions. It is designed for developers who work on projects with different runtime or library requirements. Rather than using separate version managers with different commands and configuration formats, vfox provides one extensible interface for managing multiple software development kits and tools. The selected tool versions are recorded in a project file named .tool-versions. Sharing that file with a project helps team members use the same versions and reduces differences between development environments. vfox can install and switch environments, including runtime versions and ambient libraries, and uses plugins to extend support to additional tools and ecosystems. The tool is intended to simplify project setup when version requirements vary between repositories. A developer can use its common command-line workflow to select versions, while the project’s configuration records the choices for others. vfox supports native Windows as well as Unix-like systems, making the same version-management approach available across those environments.
