About VocaPhone

VocaPhone is an Android system keyboard for speech-to-text dictation. Users switch to it in any app, speak, and the transcription is inserted at the cursor through Android’s normal keyboard interface. It supports 54 selectable languages plus automatic language detection, several writing styles, and microphone routing that can use a Bluetooth headset. Users can start, finish, cancel, retry, or undo dictation from the keyboard. Speech recognition can run locally after downloading a model, allowing dictation without a network connection. Alternatively, users can configure a self-hosted gateway on a computer or home server, using hardware they control for transcription. Gateway pairing can be performed with a QR code, and access can use device-specific tokens. The gateway route is useful for larger models than a phone can comfortably run. The keyboard writes dictated text into the current field but does not read the contents of that field. Microphone access is used only during active dictation, and camera access is requested only when scanning a pairing code. The app has no account, subscription, analytics SDK, or speech cloud service. An optional anonymous usage report is available in one build, while another build compiles that feature out. Speech and text are not included in the report. VocaPhone is intended for people who want dictation in any text field while keeping transcription on hardware they control, either the phone itself or a self-hosted gateway.
