About Databag

Databag is a federated messaging app designed for users who want to host their own communication server. Each server node can support multiple accounts, and accounts on different nodes can communicate. A user’s identity is based on public and private keys rather than a phone number or a particular hosting domain. Topics organize conversations into threads, and new contacts, messages, and calls can generate mobile notifications through UnifiedPush. Messages in sealed topics are end-to-end encrypted, meaning the hosting administrator cannot read their contents. Topics are unsealed by default, so users need to choose the sealed option for that protection. Databag supports audio and video calls, but network address traversal requires a separate relay server. Its server is described as lightweight enough to run on a small single-board computer. Databag has no central backend; users connect directly to a self-hosted server, and the ability to communicate across nodes provides federation. This architecture gives the server operator control over hosting but requires server setup and maintenance. Calls may require additional infrastructure, and end-to-end encryption applies to sealed topics rather than automatically to every topic.
