About IM2SMS
IM2SMS imports exported instant-messaging conversations into Android’s SMS storage. Users can share a chat export directly to the app or browse storage for an exported file, preview individual conversations, and then import them. The currently supported source is WhatsApp, including individual and group chats. Android requires the current default SMS app to write to the system message database, so IM2SMS must temporarily become the default messaging app during an import. Afterward, the user can reopen their preferred messaging app and restore it as the default. The interface adapts its theme to the system colors and switches between light and dark mode with the device setting. Imported group chats have limitations: the system may not preserve a group name, and the messaging app may show participant numbers or a mass-text warning. The description says group conversations work as a normal group thread only when all members use RCS. IM2SMS is for importing chat history into SMS storage, not backing up existing SMS messages; future integrations described for other messaging services are not yet supported.
