About InstaLate

InstaLate provides an online dictionary and translation lookup that can be launched while reading or using other Android apps. Selected text can be sent to it through the Android context menu or Share action, then shown in a semi-transparent overlay. A third option is a movable floating button; this mode requires the selected text to be copied or cut to the system clipboard first. On Android versions earlier than 10, the button can be shown and hidden automatically. Users can choose among several translation providers. InstaLate uses an internet connection to request a translation, and the selected provider may be able to track submitted text. The app itself does not store search history locally or remotely; the most recent search term is held temporarily in memory. Because the text is sent to an external translation provider, the description cautions users not to submit passwords or other sensitive material. The overlay and multiple launch methods are useful when a user wants to understand a word or passage without switching away from the current app. Clipboard monitoring and the floating overlay require Android permissions for those functions, and the service can optionally start when the device boots. InstaLate is a lookup aid rather than an offline translator, and its privacy depends in part on the provider chosen for each query.
