About LibreNotes

LibreNotes is a note-taking app for people who want their notes stored on a server they operate themselves. It combines a local cache with synchronization to that server, so notes remain available offline and sync when the server can be reached. Notes use Markdown and include a live preview, allowing users to write formatted text while seeing how it will appear. The app encrypts notes end to end using XChaCha20-Poly1305, with Argon2id used for key derivation. The supplied description says the server cannot see note contents in plain text or access the keys. If a note is edited on two devices and the versions conflict, the user chooses which version to keep. Deleted notes go to a trash area, where they can be restored or permanently removed. A single compiled server program is run by the user, and it binds to the local network. For access away from home, the description recommends connecting devices and the server through a private mesh network such as Tailscale or WireGuard; it says this does not require changes to the server. This means using LibreNotes involves operating or arranging access to a compatible self-hosted server rather than signing up for a hosted notes account. The same codebase supports Android, Linux desktop, and web use. The interface includes a dark theme with orange accents. LibreNotes is open-source software under AGPLv3 and does not depend on Google Play Services. It suits users who want offline notes with encrypted synchronization under their own server control.
