About Linwood Butterfly Nightly

Linwood Butterfly Nightly is an edition of Butterfly, a note-taking and drawing app organized around an open-ended workspace. Instead of restricting work to a fixed page layout, it lets users position handwritten notes, typed text, diagrams, sketches, pictures, and documents across a flexible canvas. This format supports work such as class notes, research, planning, storyboards, and whiteboarding, where ideas may need to be rearranged as they take shape. The app supports handwriting with a stylus, touch, or mouse, as well as typed text and Markdown. Users can add shapes, lines, images, and photos, and import PDFs, SVGs, and image files. Finished work can be exported to PDF, SVG, image formats, or a portable Butterfly document. Pages can use plain, ruled, grid, dotted, or music-paper backgrounds, or a custom template. To organize larger projects, users can divide documents into pages and page folders, use layers, mark areas and waypoints, and save reusable elements in packs. Text styles and palettes can be kept ready for other documents. Most elements remain editable after placement, so they can be moved, resized, recolored, and reordered. Work can stay on the device and be used offline. The app also supports choosing a different data directory or connecting WebDAV and Nextcloud for user-managed syncing. It is available across phones, tablets, desktop computers, and the web, and is open-source under AGPL-3.0. Its canvas-based approach is useful when a project mixes freehand work, diagrams, documents, and notes that do not fit neatly into a linear notebook.
