PennyWise is an Android expense tracker that can turn bank and payment SMS alerts into categorized transactions. It supports transactions from many financial institutions across multiple countries and currencies. Users can also add transactions manually or import a PDF statement, so SMS access is not the only way to create records. The app provides a searchable spending timeline, category management, monthly budgets, spending trends, and month-to-month comparisons. It can detect recurring payments and use custom rules to categorize transactions. A local AI assistant can answer questions about spending; the model runs on the phone and works offline. PIN and biometric security options, backup and restore, and multi-currency support are also available. PennyWise processes SMS and financial records on the device, with no account requirement, ads, or trackers according to its description. SMS permission is needed for automatic transaction tracking. The product is open-source and intended for people who want to reduce manual expense entry while retaining manual and statement-import options.
