About Zazen
Zazen is an offline Android meditation timer designed to stay visually unobtrusive during a sit. A timed session displays a full-screen countdown with circular progress, while an open-ended mode counts upward without setting a duration. In either mode, a closing bell can mark the end of the session. Users can schedule bells at particular points in a session, such as a transition between activities, or set a repeating bell to ring every few minutes. A silent mode replaces sound with vibration. The app includes sounds such as bowls, bells, and gongs, and its session history records previous sits and total time meditated. Presets, sessions, and preferences can be backed up to a file and restored on another device. Zazen is described as requiring no account or network access, with data kept in local storage and no ads or tracking. It is free software under the MIT license. The timer’s combination of open-ended and timed sessions, interval cues, silent vibration, and history supports both flexible practice and structured meditation routines.
