About AdAway
AdAway blocks connections to advertising and tracking hosts on Android. On rooted devices, it can update the system hosts file. On non-rooted devices, it uses Android’s VPN feature to block outgoing connections. Requests to blocked hosts are redirected to the local address 127.0.0.1, where they do not reach the requested host. Users can add predefined host files, use their own lists, and maintain allow and block rules for particular hosts. An optional local web server can respond to blocked host names, or direct those requests to an IP address chosen by the user. This makes the blocking behavior configurable beyond the supplied lists. AdAway provides different technical approaches depending on whether the device is rooted: system hosts-file changes or a local VPN. Its blocking depends on the configured host lists. AdAway is free and open source.
