About Conversations
Conversations is an Android instant messenger for the XMPP protocol. Users connect it to a compatible messaging server and can communicate through one-to-one and group chats. Messages can include images and other files, voice messages, emoji reactions, and shared location. The app supports multiple accounts in a unified inbox, contact integration, message read indicators, and private group chats as well as public conferences. Conference administrators can moderate messages, and rooms can be bookmarked. End-to-end encryption is supported through OMEMO or OpenPGP. Audio and video calls use encrypted transport, and an optional channel-binding check can improve detection of a machine-in-the-middle attack. The app also supports message delivery to compatible notification clients through UnifiedPush. Some functions require server extensions; users can inspect the server information from account details to see which extensions are available. Conversations is designed to use established open messaging protocols, avoid a required Google account, and request as few permissions as possible. It is described as battery-efficient and follows Android’s Material Design 3 styling, including dynamic colors. Desktop synchronization is supported with compatible XMPP clients. The app is useful for people who want an Android client for an existing XMPP account, with encrypted messaging, calls, files, location sharing, and group conversations. Available functions depend in part on the connected server’s support for the necessary protocol extensions.
