About Cryptographic ID
Cryptographic ID uses asymmetric signatures to help verify whether a device matches a known cryptographic identity. One described use is a Linux computer with a TPM 2.0 security chip: a private key can be sealed to measured system state, such as a secure-boot configuration, so it can sign only when the measured state matches. A verifier can then check the signature using a public key without keeping a secret verification code. The app also describes using a key on a phone to verify that the same device is present or to confirm possession of a private key. The product information cautions that phone-based guarantees are weaker than TPM-based protection because the operating system can access the phone’s private key. Cryptographic ID is intended for users who understand device attestation and asymmetric cryptography. Its evidence is a signature checked against a public key, and the strength of the conclusion depends on the hardware and system that protect the private key.
