About Duper
Duper lets a user send SMS commands to a locked Android phone to trigger a ring or request its location. The ring command sounds the phone and blinks its flashlight, which can help find a misplaced device nearby. The locate command replies with GPS coordinates by SMS at configured intervals. Both modes stop when the phone is unlocked. Users can set a command prefix, choose a custom ringtone, and configure a password for Ring or a separate secret for Locate. Ring can also require SMS confirmation. Both functions are disabled by default, and the app requests permissions as each mode is enabled. The camera permission is used only to control the torch; the app does not capture photos or video. Background location permission is needed for location requests when the app is closed. Duper operates over SMS and does not require an account, cloud service, tracking SDK, or internet permission. Settings, command history, and location data remain on the device and are excluded from Android backups and transfers. The description notes that device and Do Not Disturb policies can limit ring alerts. Duper is open-source under GPL-3.0.
