About Gravel
Gravel is a companion app for Pebble smartwatches, designed for Android phones without Google Play services. It handles watch pairing, notifications and replies, calendar and music features, health and weather information, watch faces and apps, firmware updates, and voice dictation. Watch-app permissions can be granted individually, including internet and location access, and the speech engine runs in an isolated Android process. The app removes telemetry, analytics, and crash reporting from the companion experience. Some functions are unavailable: the battery analytics page has no data, and certain newer watch hardware features do not work. Watch apps may need permission before they can use network or location functions, and app-store searches are sent only when the user starts a search. Background location supports watch apps and weather while the companion app is closed. Gravel is intended for users who want to pair and manage compatible watches without relying on Google’s services, while retaining control over watch-app permissions.
