About Knit

Knit is a messaging app that sends messages directly between nearby phones using Wi-Fi Aware and Bluetooth Low Energy, without requiring an internet connection, mobile service, or user account. Messages can be forwarded from one nearby device to another, extending their reach through a crowd or building. A public Nearby room broadcasts to people in range, while direct messages and groups are end-to-end encrypted. The public room is explicitly unencrypted because it has no fixed set of recipients and is not uploaded to a server. The app supports group and one-to-one chat, quoted replies, reactions, mentions, images and GIFs, voice notes, and files, including large phone-to-phone transfers over Wi-Fi. Messages can wait for a contact to return within range, and the app can add a contact through a link when scanning a QR code is not possible. Chats can be searched, backed up in encrypted form, and protected by on-device filtering for abusive text and explicit images. Sensitive content can be blurred until tapped, and senders can be blocked. Knit can also use an optional long-range radio paired over Bluetooth, or optional internet relays for contacts who are never nearby. Relays are off by default; the product explains that a relay can see an IP address, send time, and approximate message size, but not message contents or conversation identities. The app requires Android 10 or newer and nearby-device permissions. Location is accessed only when the user taps Send location. With relays disabled and no radio paired, communication depends on the nearby mesh. The product description says a fresh install makes no network calls and that messages are encrypted with keys generated on the device.
