About Look4Sat: Satellite tracker
Look4Sat is an Android satellite tracker and pass predictor. It calculates satellite positions relative to a station location set by the user, then lists active and upcoming passes. Pass predictions can extend up to ten days. The app also displays the progress of a current pass, its polar trajectory, and available transceiver information, helping radio operators follow a satellite’s movement and identify relevant communication details. A map view presents satellite position, footprint, and ground track. Users can search a catalog of more than 9,000 active satellites by name or NORAD catalog number. Orbital calculations work offline using stored orbital data, and custom satellite data can be imported from a text file in the Three Line Element (TLE) format. TLE data describes an object’s orbit and is used as the input for predicting where it will be. The app recommends refreshing TLE data weekly for reliable predictions. Thus, calculations can be made without a live connection, but the usefulness of future positions depends on having current orbital data. Setting the station location is also necessary because pass times and positions are calculated for that location. Look4Sat’s main workflow is to choose or import a satellite, set the observing station, and review its predicted passes and position information.
