About NetGuard
NetGuard is an Android firewall that lets users allow or block internet access for individual applications without requiring root. Rules can be set separately for Wi-Fi and mobile connections, and can also target individual network addresses. By controlling which apps can connect, users can limit data use or restrict network activity for privacy or battery reasons. Additional rules can allow access only while the screen is on, block connections while roaming, or include system applications. The app can notify users when an application accesses the internet and record network usage by app and address. It supports IPv4 and IPv6 TCP and UDP traffic, as well as tethering. An optional Pro tier adds detailed outgoing-traffic logs with search and filtering, PCAP export for analysis, per-app address rules, new-app notifications with controls, a network-speed graph in a notification, and additional themes. NetGuard is open-source and is described as having no tracking, analytics, or advertisements and no “calling home.” It supports Android 5.1 and later. The app uses Android’s local VPN mechanism for filtering, so it can provide firewall behavior without root. It is useful for users who want application-level control over network access from a single interface.
