About PrivacyBreacher
PrivacyBreacher is a proof-of-concept app that demonstrates information Android applications may be able to observe without requesting permissions. It can record when the screen turns on or off, when a charger or wired headset is connected or removed, and when the device is switched on or down. It can also read device-related details such as model and manufacturer, track Wi-Fi and mobile-data usage, and list installed apps. The app can construct a three-dimensional visualization of body movement from the information it observes. PrivacyBreacher is a research demonstration intended to showcase privacy issues in Android, rather than a general-purpose activity tracker or privacy-protection tool. Its capabilities illustrate the kinds of metadata an app may infer from system behavior even without explicit permission prompts.
