About Smart Radio Telescope

Smart Radio Telescope is a mobile control interface for a self-built radio telescope with a motorized azimuth, elevation, and polarization mount. It connects over local Wi-Fi to a Raspberry Pi controller, allowing the phone to act as the telescope’s control station. The app requires the matching hardware and backend; a simulator is available for development and demonstrations. A sky view displays stars, constellations, the dish’s pointing direction, and radio-sky overlays. An object catalogue provides targets and their rise and set times, and a user can tap an object to point the dish toward it. The app can also track selected radio sources across the sky. For raster scans, the user selects an area, sweep direction, pattern, speed, and number of rows; the measurement appears as a live heatmap and can be shared as an image. Mount controls include a prominent stop action, homing, manual movement with a virtual joystick, coordinate entry, and travel-range warnings. Live telemetry reports axis position and motion, end-stop state, controller temperature, signal strength, and system status. The app can also show the controller’s temperature, load, memory, disk use, and uptime, and can request a clean shutdown. The app communicates only with the user’s own networked device and does not contact external servers. If the backend needs a site location, the phone can provide it once per connection; that location is sent only to the backend, shown to the telescope’s other clients, and logged until the backend restarts. Smart Radio Telescope is aimed at radio-astronomy projects and education, not at standalone sky viewing without the required equipment.
