About SmsMatrix
SmsMatrix connects Android text messages with a Matrix account. For each new SMS conversation, the app opens a private one-to-one room in Matrix and forwards incoming text messages there. Messages sent in that room by the Matrix user are relayed back to the contact as SMS. This lets a person communicate with SMS contacts from a Matrix client while preserving the familiar phone-number-based conversation on the other end. The app acts as a bridge between the phone’s SMS service and a Matrix server, so it requires the Android device, SMS access, and a configured Matrix account and homeserver. The description recommends using a personally operated Matrix server for privacy. The service does not currently implement end-to-end encryption for bridged SMS conversations. Data in transit is described as using HTTPS through Matrix when the server is configured properly, but that does not make the bridged conversation end-to-end encrypted. Users should understand that the server may be able to access message contents, and that the bridge is not equivalent to a private encrypted messaging service. SmsMatrix is useful for people who want SMS conversations accessible from their Matrix client, especially when managing messages across devices. Its privacy properties depend on the chosen server configuration, and the lack of end-to-end encryption is an important limitation.
