SOFTWARE OVERVIEW

Trail Sense

Trail Sense uses a phone’s sensors to support hiking, backpacking, camping, and geocaching.

About Trail Sense

Trail Sense uses a phone’s sensors to support hiking, backpacking, camping, and geocaching. Users can place beacons and navigate toward them, follow paths, and retrace their route with backtrack. A compass is available on devices with a compass sensor, and a photo can be used as a map. The app also includes packing planning, sunset alerts, a flashlight, and weather prediction on devices with a barometer. Trail Sense works without internet access and is described as keeping data on the phone. It uses location and device sensors for navigation and related tools; optional permissions support background alerts, pedometer-based distance, camera tools, and alarms. Some features depend on hardware, such as the compass and barometer. Sensor readings and predictions depend on calibration, hardware quality, and other factors. The app’s own description says it is informational and recommends carrying backup equipment and skills in the wilderness. It should be used as one tool among others, not as the sole basis for navigation or safety decisions.
